Mind you, these books won't take you to a better place, just a very ... different one. Here are my recommendations, with links to articles I've written on some of these books:
1. Blindness, by José Saramago. A plague strikes, and civilization collapses.
2. The Double, by José Saramago. What if there was more than one version of you?
3. The Metamorphosis, by Franz Kakfa. For those moments of alienation, when you feel the world is out to squish you underfoot.
4. The Trial, by Franz Kafka. They're out to get you, and they'll never tell you why.
5. The Castle, by Franz Kafka. Reach the castle, if you can...
My across-the-world move this summer has had me running around like crazy, but not bookless. My best reads for the summer:
